What car seat do I need for a 4 year old?

A 4 year old typically falls into a forward-facing or high-back booster car seat, depending on their height and weight rather than age alone. Irish law requires children to remain rear-facing until at least 15 months, but many parents choose to keep their child rear-facing for longer, as it's the safer option. Once your child is ready to face forward, look for an i-Size seat suitable for their current height most seats in this stage cover 76–150cm. What are the car seat requirements in Ireland?

Under Irish law, any child under 150cm or 36kg must use an appropriate child car seat in any car or goods vehicle. Children must remain rear-facing until at least 15 months old, and it's recommended to keep them rear-facing for as long as possible after that for extra protection. The driver is legally responsible for ensuring any passenger under 17 is properly restrained. What's the right car seat for 9 months to 11 years?

For children aged roughly 9 months to 11 years, an all-in-one or combination car seat can be a practical option these seats adjust through multiple stages as your child grows, from a forward-facing harness seat right through to a booster, so you don't need to buy separate seats at each stage. Alternatively, you can choose dedicated seats for each stage: a forward-facing seat first, followed by a high-back booster once your child reaches around 100cm.
